Writer's Eye Competition


ABOUT THE WRITER’S EYE

The Writer’s Eye competition links the inspiration of writers to the creative vision of artists. Participants are invited to write a poem or short story in response to the artwork from the “In Betweens” exhibit. The Writer’s Eye competition begins September 30th and runs until November 20, 2010. Visitors are invited to take a self-guided tour or schedule a guided tour of the exhibit. The competition is open to students in grades 4-12,college students, and adults. Entry forms should accompany submissions.

Prizes will be awarded in the following age groups:

Category 1: Grades 4, 5, 6
Category 2: Grades 7, 8, 9
Category 3: Grades 10, 11, 12
Category 4: College and Adult

1st Prize: in each category is a $50 gift card
2nd Prize: in each category is a $25 gift card
3rd Prize: in each category is a $10 gift card

Additionally, all participants will receive ribbons.
Deadline for entries is November 29, 2010 by 5:00 pm.
An awards ceremony will be held at YorkArts on First Friday, February 4, 2011.

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

The “In Betweens” exhibit invited artists to focus on those things overlooked and taken for granted: beautiful moments, people and things that otherwise slip through the cracks. This exhibit features work by local and national artists.

Area Poetry Happenings


Heavyword Slam

Hey poetry fans, the 10th annual (OK so we skipped a year) Heavyword slam is coming up, Sunday, September 12, from 6-9 at Appalachian Brewing Company (flyer and registration form attached). There are only 30 slam spots available and they are filling fast, so get your registration form in soon! 

The slam is sponsored by the Governor’s Advisory Commission on African American Affairs and is a fundraiser for Firm Foundation’s Proud Dad’s (and Mom’s) parenting program http://www.firmfoundation.org/ .
Shaashawn “The Voyce” Dial is our hostess with the mostess, and the judges are Anthony Elby (Court St Poetry), Ryan Mergen (most recent Heavyword slam champion,) Ms Phyne (of Worldwide fame,)a mystery judge, and one judge chosen at random from the audience!

Cash prizes for first, second and third place!!!!!!

POETIC PERKOLATIONS  


It's time again for Poetic Perkolations this coming Tuesday!  Hope you can come out for some writing fun!  We'll be meeting again at Gullifty's ~ across the parking lot from the Crimson Frog ~ because the Frog is closed on weekday evenings for the summer.

                         to gather and enjoy!  We will spend time during
                         the first hour doing some writing.  We will even
                         learn a little about the nuts-and-bolts of writing
                         poetry.  The second hour will be an open
                         reading.

Upward Spiral Poetry Series links the PA & MD reading scenes via a poet exchange. Every other month, Yorkarts hosts the northern editions of Upward Spiral. All readings begin at 3:00 p.m.
